The Art of Sensu — A Master's Journey in Every Fold
A Japanese sensu is not just a tool — it's a work of art breathing centuries of tradition. Watch the making process of our curated fan collection.
The Story Woven into Every Fan
Sensu. Behind its elegant form lies hundreds of meticulous steps and generations of artisan expertise.
At CHINMI JAPAN, we carry fans born from two extraordinary collaborations: "Naga x KAPUKI" and "Iida Dankoh x KAPUKI." Each brings a unique vision, fusing traditional techniques with contemporary design.

Bamboo Selection
A great fan starts with great bamboo. Artisans examine each piece by hand — testing flexibility, checking knot placement, and assessing grain beauty. This selection alone can take over half a day.
Painting and Finishing
The surfing motif of "Naga x KAPUKI," or Iida Dankoh's "Destruction," "Order," and "Chaos" — each design breathes life onto washi paper. Hand-painted one by one, every fan carries its own subtle personality.
A Fan Reflects the Owner's Character
In Japan, fans have long expressed one's aesthetic sensibility and social standing. Even today, carrying a fine sensu is a sign of respect for Japanese culture.
CHINMI JAPAN delivers these fans not just as souvenirs, but as everyday treasures to customers around the world.
